Recruitment to the CDT has now closed, but interested candidates are advised to consider applying to other funded PhD studentships available at the University of Southampton here. Details of the School of Engineering's postgraduate programme are available here.
The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Next Generation Computational Modelling (NGCM) brings together world class simulation and modelling research and provides a stimulating training programme for PhD students. The centre is jointly funded by EPSRC, the University of Southampton, and industrial partners. Fully-funded studentships for at least 11 PhD students per year were available between 2014 and 2018 in a diverse range of scientific fields, such as Engineering, Chemistry and Physics.
The 4-year PhD programme consistes of a taught first year with some research components, followed by three years of full time research. The taught component provides comprehensive training in state-of-the art computational modelling methodologies, including programming and software engineering for computational science and engineering, simulation methods and numerical techniques, and high performance computing; combined with additional transferable skills training. The research component of our PhD programme will push forward and innovate computational methodology, such as exploitation of emerging parallel hardware, new multi-physics, multi-scale and multi-paradigm simulation methods, and tools and methods to apply computer simulation in an effective and reproducible way. This will happen in the context of applied real-world research problems, generally in collaboration with our diverse set of partners.
