The 2019 NGCM Summer Academy took place between 01 – 05 July 2019 on University of Southampton’s Boldrewood Campus. Thanks to everyone who attended; we hope you had a great time and learned a lot!
The 2019 CDT-NGCM Summer Academy at the University of Southampton was the last to be dedicated to completing the taught component of a new cohort of students. A mix of courses were compiled that involved data visualisation with VTK/Mayavi, code optimisation with national experts in high-performance computing, as well as courses in Machine Learning and GPU programming with CUDA. The wide advertisement of the event saw a total of 107 students attending courses throughout the week, from not only the fifth cohort of NGCM students but also other students from Southampton and other institutions, both nationally and internationally. Feedback from the attendees was positive and included calls for further training events in the future: There was plenty to keep people occupied, lots of food and opportunities to socialise during the week, including dinner at Ceno in Portswood.
Programme
Course details:
- VTK and Mayavi (delivered by Dr. Prabhu Ramachandran, IIT Bombay)
- Optimising Scientific Software (delivered by Adrian Jackson, EPCC and ARCHER)
- Machine Learning (delivered by Prof Adam Prugel-Bennett, Prof Mahesan Niranjan and Dr. Jonathon Hare)
- GPU programming using CUDA (delivered by Jony Castagna, STFC)
The VTK/Mayavi and Optimising Scientific Software courses ran in parallel so participants could only choose one of these courses. We had lots of very positive feedback from participants:
- “Overall excellent. Interesting, challenging material presented very well.”
- “The training was very well organised and very impactful.”
- “Optimisation course was really helpful, I covered blank spaces in my knowledge of compilers.”
