Industry seminar: Simulation of coastal and shelf seas

Dr Lambkin from ABPmer opened the seminar series for the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Next Generation Computational Modelling (NGCM) in the academic year 2015/2015, welcoming the new NGCM CDT students that have started in September 2015.

Dr Lambkin explained why computer simulation is important for ABPmer and what type of simulations are carried out; these includes simulations of tides, waves and sediment transport processes to inform and enhance their consulting work. Used appropriately, numerical modelling tools can be used to supplement otherwise sparse observed in-situ data, and to investigate the potential effects of the proposed development on the surrounding (physical) environment.

This presentation concluded with a summery of the work that Rory Brown, a NGCM PhD, carried out over the summer in collaboration with ABPmer. While Rory is working on astrophysics research, the modelling techniques he uses there (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) are similarly part of ABPmer’s tool set.

Dr David Lambkin has a research background in coastal oceanography and sediment dynamics. He joined ABPmer 7 years ago and is a senior member of the Modelling Team. In recent years, David has mainly contributed to numerous Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Metocean Statistics studies on behalf of offshore wind farm and tidal power developers. David has also lead the development of a long term wave hindcast dataset and wave forecasting system (SEASTATES.net) that provides valuable information for many projects undertaken by the company. A keen sailor since he was young, David combines work and pleasure by providing tidal current predictions to the British Sailing Team, including the London and Rio Olympic venues.
