Nick Granger Brown, Mike Elder and Alex Kay shared an overview of computational modelling used at Seagate Systems Ltd UK to support development engineering, continuous improvement and future technology and growth. Simulation of mechanical stress and vibrations, and heat transfer and cooling were described in more detail. The validation of simulation results are key to improve confidence in the numerical findings; wherever possible comparisons with the experiments and measurements on prototypes are used. Practical constraints included limited availability of time and compute resources, and the choice of an appropriate model is crucial to obtain relevant results under externally driven time pressures. Finally, the importance of being able to communicate findings to a non expert audience was emphasised.
